The purpose of the OU

The Open University (OU) is the United Kingdom's only university dedicated to distance learning.

Visit the New to the OU website to read how with most courses there are no previous qualifications required to study, you have to be aged 18 when your course starts but there is no upper age limit.

We have around 150,000 undergraduate and more than 30,000 postgraduate students. 10,000 of our students have disabilities.
The Open University's style of teaching is called supported open learning.

Nearly all students are studying part-time. About 70 per cent of undergraduate students are in full-time employment. More than 50,000 students are sponsored by their employers for their studies.

11,000 people are currently studying for OU Higher Degrees.

Most OU courses are available throughout Europe. Some of them are available in many other parts of the world. More than 25,000 OU students live outside the UK.

The University itself is ranked among the top UK universities for the quality of its teaching (see news release).

A third of our UK undergraduate students have entry qualifications lower than those normally demanded by other UK universities.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Open University is also the name of other institutions. See Distance education or the Open Universities category for a list.

The Open University (OU) is the UK's 'open' learning university. It was established in 1969, and the first students started in January 1971.[4] The majority of students are based in the UK, but its courses are also studied in the rest of Europe, in North and South America, in Africa and in Australasia/Asia.[5] The administration is based at Walton Hall, Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, but has offices in each of its thirteen regions around the UK. The university awards undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, diplomas and certificates.

With more than 180,000 students enrolled, including more than 25,000 students studying overseas,[6] it is the largest academic institution in the UK by student number, and qualifies as one of the world's mega universities. Since it was founded, more than 3 million students have studied its courses. It was rated top University in England and Wales for student satisfaction in the 2005[7] and 2006[8] UK government national student satisfaction survey
